If you’re going to promote an up-and-coming manager, make sure that their “promotion” is worthwhile.

It should come with a real bump in salary and an announcement to the business about their elevation.

These are the nice things about being promoted.

The new manager deserves and should have them before the impact of their new role hits.

However, what you do before you promote your new manager can be critical to their success in the new role.

It’s a step often omitted, and that can lead to pain for business owners and their newly promoted managers further down the line.

Before you promote someone, talk through with them what will be expected of them in their new role.

Discuss the training or support they or you feel will be needed to help them succeed.

Talk also about potential issues within the team you are asking them to manage.

Prepare the ground with them rather than parachuting people into their new job.

That will build confidence and competence.

Promotions must be worth having both for the business and those who perform key roles within it.

Very best,

David
