Poor managers can hurt a business in numerous ways.

Many don’t do it deliberately; they just haven’t been told or shown how to manage well.

On the other hand, some don’t want to know; they’re quite happy with life as it is.

The “damage” can manifest itself in different ways. Here are seven common examples associated with an underperforming team, leader or department.

  • Falling sales
  • High staff turnover
  • Reputational damage
  • High levels of litigation
  • Falling margins
  • Low morale
  • A toxic environment

Poor managers can remain in place, doing damage, because of pressures elsewhere in the organisation.

Righting their direction can take time and significant input from senior management or HR.

It would be far better if management development were an integral part of company culture.

New managers would be better prepared for their roles and responsibilities.

And those working under their direction would know the standards and results they are expected to deliver.

The Team Turnaround issue could help you start righting the direction for one or more of your managers today.

Very best,

David
