A big component of how your week, month, quarter or year will go depends on the people you work with or lead.
So, with that thought in mind, here are five reasons why building a successful team is so important.
1. There’s huge satisfaction in seeing people grow
The newsletter I publish is called Quietly Good to honour all of the hidden stars I’ve worked with over many years.
With development and coaching, many quietly competent people have become excellent leaders and top performers in their fields.
Years later, the bond we developed is still there even though we’ve all moved on and gone to other places. Some are now running their own businesses, and I’m delighted to have played some part in all their lives.
2. You get to work in a positive and (generally) happy environment
Once feelings of doom and cynicism have been banished, and when your team start to believe that there’s a positive change occurring,
You get to work in a place where people smile and are happy to be at work (most of the time).
True, nothing is perfect in this world, and pressures from inside and outside the workplace can affect team members.
But generally, successful teams cope well with pressure when they are committed to a cause and each other.
3. There’s much more time for higher work
If you have a high-performing team, your day-to-day input to their work will be minimal. They don’t need micromanaging. They know what’s expected and they want to get to it.
When you’re not down in the nitty-gritty, you have much more time for higher-level and more profitable work.
4. Your team are there for you when you’re under pressure
When your team know that they can count on your support, you’ll have theirs when they know you’re under pressure.
Meeting deadlines, delivering for difficult clients and dealing with pressure from above are instances when your team will rally on your behalf.
It’s support you earn, and it’s an invaluable asset when it comes to achieving objectives.
5. Achieving tough targets and objectives feels great
Finally, achieving targets and objectives feels great, and it’s even better when you can share those achievements with your team. Working hard is essential, but so too is celebrating success and the milestones and goals met along the way.
I won’t pretend that building and leading a highly successful team is easy. It takes time and sometimes, a lot of patience, but it’s worth it.
