Recent research by LinkedIn highlighted something surprising and perhaps worrying for those who own or run businesses.

3,000 employees (out of 10,000) said they would want to be promoted to a managerial position.

In other words,

70% would not want a promotion.

That’s something to ponder when you’re thinking about your company’s development.

Where are your managers going to come from?

And why this seeming lack of aspiration?

The survey identified that it stems from,

  • Fear of not having the skills to do the job
  • Not wanting the additional pressure that would come with a promotion

The majority of those surveyed said that they were not receiving training or guidance about leadership.

Their day-to-day focus is on succeeding in their current role.

They also felt that peers who take promotion, do s with minimal training or support.

What’s the answer?

More training and coaching for sure.

Mentorship and coaching in managerial skills would also help to build skills and confidence.

In this area, the Team Turnaround issue (details here) will certainly provide an inexperienced manager with guidelines for effectively managing a team.

The turnaround referred to is as much about changing the manager’s point of view as it is about the team that they lead.
