The Turks have a homely proverb: they say,

“The fish stinks first at the head.”

If you’re unhappy with the culture or attitude of the people you lead, you must first look to yourself to be the agent of change.

That’s because a company, department, or division’s culture starts with its leader.

Leaders influence every part of the organisation, directly or indirectly.

In a business or group with few employees, everyone feels that influence directly.

In a larger organisation, where the leader is distant, they transmit influence through managers entrusted to deliver their vision or plan.

Whether you lead one person or a thousand, try to be a good leader.

Communicate clearly on what’s expected and lead by good example.

Don’t say one thing and do another.

Don’t surprise or shock your team with sudden changes in plan or direction.

Bring your team along with you towards goals and objectives.

Encourage them in their work and celebrate their successes.

Poor leaders create uncertainty and the conditions that lead to fear, stress, and burnout.

To get ahead, don’t be a stinky fish.
